Efficient Multimodal solutions for heavy mining equipment
A recent project highlighted our ability to overcome logistical challenges through efficient multimodal transportation solutions. Our Client, operating in the mining industry, required the transportation of heavy quarry equipment. We developed a tailored solution that involved coordinating multiple transportation methods, ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of the equipment.
Given the size and weight of the equipment, container shipping was not an option, as the cargo exceeded the weight limits of reinforced containers; and container terminals are unable to handle such heavy loads. We opted for a non-containerized, bulk transportation method to meet physical characteristics of cargo.
To complete the transportation, we used a Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO) vessel, ideal for heavy and oversized cargo. The equipment was loaded onto MAFI platforms and rolled onto the vessel. Upon arrival, the cargo was removed from the platforms and transported via trawls to our bonded warehouse, where it was stored temporarily awaiting the next stage of the journey.
For the second leg of the journey, we selected a multipurpose crane-operated dry cargo vessel. The equipment was split between the vessel's hold and open deck. Vertical loading and unloading were performed using both ship and shore cranes to ensure smooth handling of the oversized cargo.

Overcoming Key Challenges

With various counterparties involved in each leg of the journey, we had to ensure seamless communication and timely updates, keeping everything on track and minimizing potential delays.
- 33. High Cargo Value:The high value of the cargo added an additional layer of risk. Through diligent planning and consistent monitoring, we successfully mitigated these risks and ensured that the equipment arrived safely at its destination.
Despite the challenges, our Team delivered the equipment on time and in excellent condition. By utilizing a flexible and adaptive multimodal transportation approach, we were able to overcome logistical obstacles and ensure that our Client’s needs were met.
