The transition period for the updated ADR (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) regulations has officially ended. Although the new rules technically came into force on 1 January 2025, hauliers were granted a grace period to adapt. As of July, full compliance is now required.
Key points
1.Document Handling:
All ADR transport documents must now be kept exclusively in the driver’s cab. It is no longer acceptable to store them elsewhere in the transport unit. This change affects not only drivers but also consignors and freight forwarders who previously submitted documents collectively.
2.Training Requirements:
Drivers transporting limited quantities (LQ) of dangerous goods—such as paints, aerosols, or small chemical packages—must now undergo mandatory ADR training.
3.New UN Numbers and Materials:
The updated ADR framework introduces 11 new UN numbers, covering emerging materials like sodium-ion batteries, electric vehicles, and certain fire extinguishing agents.
4.Stricter Packaging and Labeling:
The rules for packaging, labeling, and documentation have been tightened, especially for materials that pose a fire risk. New procedures also apply to the transport of hazardous waste, including asbestos, and to bulk/container transport, which must now meet updated safety standards.
